What would really help me with the nuts and bolts vision is a "web map" or flowchart that shows all the pieces of the app and where/how they fit together. I think this would help us see any holes or weak spots in the overall design as well as allow us to break it down in sections/pages as we work on the look and layout. I believe we are all on the same page but this would help us all KNOW we are on the same page. We could probably all work on this together, or if one person wanted to get the basic app all layed out as much as possible, then we could all talk it through and brainstorm to see if any other ideas pop up and how they might fit in This would also give us more criteria as we look at other platforms/tools to consider.

Or if we feel really crazy, we could all make our own webmap/flowchart of the app just to see everyone's take or vision of what they think the app will be like upon completion and then we can use all of those to create the ONE WEBMAP TO RULE THEM ALL!!

So, thoughts, feelings, concerns? I can Google+ anytime this weekend if anyone wants to bounce ideas or brainstorm. And if we already got this, I'm cool with that too.

To me,, this is kinda like a blueprint, and I can visualize an unfinished house a lot better when I see the blueprint first.
What about a Help area? There's always someone who needs help figuring out what to do. Do we want to include a Contact page, so if someone needs to talk or vent or ???, there is a page that will have a special contact number so they can call and talk to someone (a specialist ??) right then.

Do we want profile pages? As if you click on someone on the map you are brought to their profile where then there is the communication option? or do we just want a message/communication page to pop up. I would think that Baghdad alone would be plastered with Tiks so that you couldn't even see it.

For some reason, I have a vision of a map that is broken out into regions - it could be by provinces or maybe even bigger regions. Like if it was the US, you might have a map that is broken up into North East, Midwest, Pacific, SOuthern, Southwest, East Coast. And then as you click on the region, then you get a list of the provinces in that region (drop down style maybe) and then you click on the province, and then you get a list of the towns etc. Or if done by province, maybe it could work kind of like The weather Channel app where you start with the whole country, then zoom into state, and then list out the locales (cities, towns) to be selected ??? Just thoughts.

Im all for the Tiks idea if we can figure out the logistics to make it work. Since i'm not very familiar with the action in each country, I dont have any idea what the distribution of the stories might be like. Are there some parts of the country that are dead zones and never had any activity? Were there a few zones that were heavily covered for many months or years? Maybe these zones should have a separate distinction to accommodate for this - kind of like NYC would be broken down further into bouroughs and then Manhattan would be broken down further into Upper West Side, SoHo, Midtown etc. ???

If the app is more of a "chat"/discussion board thing that happens live without any artificats (posted stories or audio streaming of the stories), then that makes more sense to me!! This goes back to Jonathans mind map. When it gets to the Communicate box, i'm still a little fuzzy about what that is.I don't really have any preferences about how the communicate box is going to work. What happens to me is usually when I hear about a new product coming out and someone tells me about it, I get an immediate image of what its going to be...then when I actually get it and see it, it is usually nothing like I visioned it to be but then its like "OH, thats what it is". Same with this for me. I heard Stories of the Flag - Vets share their stories and now i am stuck trying to change the vision I have from when I first heard... :) Cool???

If it was Tiks of people who are just logged in, it would be cool if you could zoom in to the region or whatever, then if you touch a Tik, a small box pops up with a short profile of who that Tik represents (picture, name, rank).

Still, maybe Jonathan can fill us in on how many people may use this app at the same time. Less than 100? A thousand? There were a lot of troops involved so how what % will end up needing this app and then what % of that group would end up using at the same time?? Still just a thinkin....
The purpose of the App is therapeutic, basically an extension of a PTSD group. Using social tools the vets can share stories based on location they happened in. They will be able to connect with other veterans that served in the same location at the same time or during a different timeframe.

In regards to how many people can be logged on, I do no think every service member with PTSD would be logged on at once, but once this App gets popular I think there is a good chance large numbers of people can be logged on at the same time. I would hate to experience server problems, which would kick people off or deny service. That is a good question for Clark.

Here is how I see the user navigating the application.

For example, when the person navigates to the Afghanistan page they initially will just see a Map of the country. If they served in Kabul they would zoom in to Kabul area and then if people were on line they would see their pictures and profiles.

I posted this on the technology platform page as well. Imagine the Kabul area has discussions happening like our MALT 14 Facebook group. New pictures can be posted and new threads can be started.

As far as artifacts, we need to make sure the platform can support everything. Right now I am thinking pictures and videos. That is pretty standard. Voice threads would be cool but what social platform uses that?

Do we want a bunch of tools or a platform with some good tools integrated that work well with the platform. We need to keep in mind that upgrading the platform might cause them to function differently than before. This was covered in Digital Habitats.
Cool. Its becoming clearer. Where do they tell their stories? Will it be a lot like facebook where there is a "news feed" type that shows all the threads currently going, or will it be more static like Sakai Forums which build up over time but are always there (and includes read/not read). Facebook posts tie back to a profile so you can view all the actions of someone on their profile page but you can also see it on the "newsfeed" as well.

Of course there is always chat which allows you to only interact with those online (syncronous), Facebook is a blend with a chat feature, but you can still jump on and off but the new stuff pushes the old off the page although its still accessible if you scroll down far enough. Sakai style is completely static but the threads as you can see can grow and grow.

So as far as the map goes, they only see the people who are on line at the time, right? Do you envision a list of those who are online, or little flags on the map (tiks) that have their picture and name on them to represent the person, or maybe their head just floats above the map with their name below.

So, once you see who is online, do you click the name of the person to interact? Or do you click on Kabul on map, then it takes you to a Facebook like area or chat type of area, where you can see a list of people who are online at the time, and then you can post there and interact - not quite like chat but more like facebook where the new post is on top. People can comment on the post, or post new... ??? Is that closer to what you are thinking? Then they can scroll down and see what else has been posted recently etc. Comment etc... ???

But still, what about the stories? Are they just telling their stories at the various times when they post? Are they making videos etc and then posting those like we would post videos to facebook for others to view? If they make a video, I guess they wouldn't want to use YouTube to post it so we would probably need a way to have them upload convert and post videos behind the login wall for protection.

I think voicethreads maybe would be more like mp3s??

Would there be an archive section for people who just want to log in and hear stories, or view the stories? Or would someone have to wait for a person to post a link to the story they posted before checking it out? I kinda imagined the stories being a few minutes long at least. I wasn't sure if people wanted to tell their story over and over again in posts, or just tell it once and post it then refer people to it. Maybe its therapeutic to tell it over and over. Is it? Would that be part of the therapy?

Its hard to type and think in this small box because I cant see what I have typed before so this post may be all over the place.

I definitely understand the first paragraph of JS's last post. I got that part.

I don't think the server would be a problem because if the Army approves the app etc, then they might actually house it all on their servers - who knows. That is all just a a matter of hardware and resources...so it shouldn't affect us right now in the design stages.

After reading Wikinomics chapter 7, we may be able to MASHUP this app with Google maps although that may be more complex than we have time for. Do you picture just a simple map of the country with just the regions outlined, or a more complex one like a google map sort? Are there some regions that saw so much action that they need to be broken down further because so many people were there? Do the large cities need to be broken down into sections or are the provinces small enough?

That is all....for now~!!
I have been working on teaching myself android app programming plus I have been working on the devlopment of the app. I will spare you all of the details of the process...
What functions do you want the app to have? Do you want to be able to add friends? Do you want to have a community wall to post comments? Do you want the users to be able to post personal comments?

Do you want the app to have the buttons (ie settings, send message, home) on the screen or do you want the user to press the menu button to access these controls? The iphone does not have a menu button so the buttons would have to be on the screen for that release. Do you have any ideas for color scheme? Do you have any ideas for the applications icon? Do you want to load the app with a load/splash animated type screen?

Do you want to connect the app to the current PTSD Coach app or do you want me to try to add some of the functions of PTSD Coach to the vetapp so that they are both iwthin one app, the vetapp? In that case, do you want me to follow the same color scheme as the PTSD Coach or do you want to have an independent color scheme/theme/design?

There are a lot of decisions to be made from "what order do we want to see user information displayed" to "how big should the nav buttons be". With a blueprint, we can then focus in on one area at a time and brainstorm it out until its locked in. Then we can think more about the look and how the pages function. This is a great start! I like the messaging function - but that brings up more questions like "Should it send the user an email, an IM, or a in-app message?" Or if you were the user, would you want a bunch of random emails coming from people you don't know? Maybe just a "wall" or similar would be better?? I am sure at some point we might have to divide and conquor on the details and then come together to discuss.

This app offers a variety of resources to support you in your experience with post traumatic stress disorder. The resources are intended to not only support veterans and other soldiers, but also their wives, husbands, children, parents, and other family members that have been affected by PTSD in some way. We are continually new support resources on post traumatic stress disorder, and this app will automatically update with that new content.

Some of the PTSD resources this app provides includes:

News: A live feed of news updates related to PTSD as well as other relevant information for veterans and their families. We collect this news from some of the best military and private organizations working to support veterans.

Videos: A comprehensive library of videos related to post traumatic stress disorder for vets. These videos include testimonies from other soldiers and their families, information on military health resources for veterans, professional counseling and psychiatry insights on PTSD, and practical tips on how to seek professional help for how PTSD is affecting you and/or your loved ones.

Podcasts: These are streaming audio files that you can listen to on your mobile device. Many of the podcasts also provide links for you to download the actual file for future use on your mobile phone or computer. The podcasts consist of not only professional counselors and psychiatrists discussing PTSD, but also personal stories from veterans and their experiences with post traumatic stress disorder.

Links: We have included a variety of useful websites where you can seek additional information about how either the military or private organizations can support you in your experience with PTSD.

Fan Wall: This is an interactive page where you can post comments and meet others who are struggling with PTSD. We hope the Fan Wall is a great place for you to see there are many other veterans and family members that are going through similar experiences, and that there is hope for a bright future.

Mailing List: This allows you to sign up for Hope for One's mailing list so we can update you on future enhancements. We plan to not only enhance this mobile app, but also launch more services on a future website focused on PTSD.

I was quite curious by their design so after getting out of class I downloaded the app. So, this is my conclusion... The app was created by a company that you can pay to create apps for you. For the most part, all of the apps that are created through the given company have the same basic layout and are quite cookie cutter. But, either way, the app works and has quite a large amount of functionality. But, the app has NO security. I downloaded and installed the app and was able to read through all of the posts before I even got home. On top of that, the app uses the gps function so whenever you checkin or post it records where you were on a map and ANYONE can view that information. I didn't even have to create an account to read all of the posts or view where the people were when they posted. It is a great app that seems to be doing great things but it is a COMPLETE breach of security. Personal and could be even national breach of security I didn't spend a lot of time reading through the posts. But, within the short time of reading through the posts I read about a man that posted that he was cheating on his wife with a mistress and going to the strip clubs all because he was having trouble coping with PTSD. I found all of this information out in little to no time.

With all of that being said.... I would suggest looking through the many things that the app offers. I was trying to think through how to create an app that is better than/ is not simply reproducing what that app has. I know security will be a big thing for the app that will be produced but other than that, what are ideas to improve/differentiate from the PTSD suppport app? Just throwing out questions so that I know which direction to take the app production. :)
Clark,

Thanks for the info. I will go check that App out. I find it disturbing that the posts can be viewed by anyone. The veterans need to be able to share stories, talk about how they are feeling and issues they are dealing with, all in a secure environment. The military medical community and Veteran's Administration would be the gatekeepers for our APP if we market this to the government. If we decide to market to a non-profit veterans organization then we would need to figure out security.

You mentioned one veteran posting about cheating on his wife. Some veterans deal with infidelity. Combat can be exhilarating; once vets get back they look for ways to replicate the rush of combat, the adrenalin rush of a firefight. Some vets go that route. Not making excuses for the behavior but these vets need to be able to talk about that securely without fear of repercussion.

In a previous post I mentioned having this monitored by a psychologist or group of psychologists who treat veterans. When a vet posts something about cheating on his wife and it is tied to combat experiences, like looking for the adrenalin rush, then a psychologist needs to step in so that behavior can be talked about/addressed. That is an issue we would have to work on. Probably means approaching a psychologist associating or something. Just thinking out loud.

Their are two functions within the program that allow you to connect with people. One you can add friends/family phone numbers into the app for emergency contact. This isn't anything that someone couldn't already have. meaning they already have the contacts within their phone, more than likely. Nothing like what the VetApp is looking to offer. As for contacting professional care. The app just gives a list of number, one being 911, one being the veternas crisis line. Then they give a list of websites/phonue numbers 5 different companies/organizations that can help you find support near you. Nothing difficult to do, very easy to add to an app. All they are doing is getting a list of resources together and placing them in a central location. As for the apps assesments, managing PTSD tools, and the learning about PTSD. All of those functions are also VERY simple to implement. Nothing that couldn't be found online it is all just easily accessed in a central location and gives the veterans a way of always having the basic tools and reminders with them. The app doesn't need the internet to run so at any time the veterans can run the app and access all of the information and run through the basic skills/tools to help them manage their PTSD any time and any place. The VetApp could easily, in time, after the initial intended funtions are implemented, offer the app users a function that will be just like the PTSD Coach. Meaning the users will be able to quickly diagnosis and manage their PTSD with some basic tools/skills that are professionally recommended. Just some thoughts and my review of the PTSD Coach. it is a wonderful app with GREAT abilities and functions. Very basic but very useful. It offers nothing close to the things that this team is wanting to offer with the VetApp. And if I am not mistaken the PTSD Coach won an app contest with the military. I believe that they got first prize.
Stories from Main St.". It is a free app from the Smithsonian. This app is based on anonymity. You have two choices with this app - Listen or Add a story.

LISTENING - Selecting Listening immediately starts playing a story. There is a LARGE PAUSE BUTTON in the middle of the bottom of the screen. Also, there is a Home button at the top to return to the Main Menu. As you listen, you have 4 options: Who, What, Record, and Volume. Under Who, you can select 4 options Boy, Girl, Man, Woman. What gives you the options of which questions you would like to hear the answers to. Record takes you to the same place as Add a story. Volume is self explanitory.

ADD A STORY - Click on this and you are prompted to enter Who is talking (Boy Girl man Woman) and once selected, it asks you to select a question to respond to. Next, you get an instruction screen to 1. record 2. Listen 3. Submit. There is also a reset button and a home button on this screen.

The LAYOUT of this app is very simplistic. It makes it easy for anyone to use their phone to record their story. It is also easy for the user to select their demographic and the question helps focus the storyteller. Our app could include something similar. Obviously we don't need the Boy/Girl choices. We could include locale.

QUESTION: Do we want the locale to be where the story takes place or the locale of the main base that the storyteller was stationed? Do we want to split up the countries into sections or sort by cities or both?

This app doesn't allow to "like" any stories or even know who is talking. There aren't any user accounts or any way to comment on the stories. I also don't know if there is anyone on the back end "approving" the stories before they are put into rotation.

I do like the simplicity of the ADD Story section and I like the fact that you can listen to stories randomly (like pandora). So if you want to just listen to some stories without any hassle, BOOM, you can! Is this something we would like to have - a JUST LISTEN section. Then if they hear a story that they like, they can click a Thumb Up button that will add it to their "favorites" for later review or interaction.
Trey,

Team,

Here is the original concept for the “The ‘War Story APP for Combat Veterans”. On this page lets discuss if and how we need to change the original concept to improve the design.

If you would like to review it here is the link to my site:

http://www.jonathansilk.me/Jonathan_Silk/Design.html

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) effects a large population of veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan to include myself. I am sharing this because I care deeply about the subject and think a lot more needs to be done to help veterans suffering from PTSD. So I do not mind sharing that I have been diagnosed with it.

I enjoy playing with social media tools so I have been thinking how do I integrate social media and combat stories. Telling stories is therapeutic and veterans that return and re-integrate into society trying to live normal lives need people to talk to. Often times they do not share stories with their family members, for a variety of reasons, to include they do not feel they would understand.

My idea for designing this is to design a social media application that is controlled by the military medical system and the Veterans Administration. This application would allow veterans to connect with other veterans and share stories via the application or they could arrange meetings, etc…

The application would also have a “genius” function like the Itunes genius function so a veteran who wanted tot alk about experiences he/she had in a specific part of Iraq or Afghanistan could search for that location, for example “Kabul” and the genius application would deliver a list of veterans in the area (definition of the area TBD) who had experiences in or around Kabul.

This application would also help veterans learn better coping and reintegration strategies, which could help improve practice that can lead to new practices. This would be monitored by the military medical community and Veteran’s Administration and shared with Veteran’s.

Application could be easily modified by the civilian medical community for use by victims of crime and other traumatic experiences.
THANKS for posting this!!
